Note to vagrants: Laughing is okay. But don't you dare start coughing amongst those laughs, or we the residents of Brighton will rain the thunder of justice upon you.

Crime Beat

More amazing than actually humorous:

Dryden Theatre: Key Largo

There isn't enough I can say about Humphrey Bogart. But you haven't really appreciated him until you've seen him on the big screen. KEY LARGO is one of his best, and it's playing at the Dryden Theatre tonight, so catch it if you can. It re-teams Bogart with his MALTESE FALCON director John Huston, and adds noir vets Lauren Bacall (DARK PASSAGE), Edward G. Robinson (SCARLET STREET) and Claire Trevor (MURDER, MY SWEET) for good measure.

Crime Beat

A Bushnell's Basin Fire Call:

May 29: 4:29 a.m.: Limbs smoking on Austin Road at Route 31

The first image that came to mind was a guy standing at the corner, arms ablaze. But then I realized it could be a couple of legs holding Winstons between their toes. God I hate yellow nai.

Dryden Theatre: Niagara

As if you don't already have it marked off on your calendar. The color noir NIAGARA, with Marilyn Monroe and Joseph Cotten is showing at the Dryden Theatre tonight. It's part of a Marilyn Monroe series this summer, and, anyway, wouldn't fit into the regular film noir program coming in January and February.

Crime Beat

Okay, this is sort of a long one, so bear with me...

A Rochester teenager is facing charges in connection with the theft of property from unlocked vehicles in the village of Fairport.

Nathaniel J. Hoover, 17, of 91 Kislingbury St., Rochester, is charged with fourth-degree grand larceny, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, unlawful fleeing from a police officer, second-degree reckless endangerment, resisting arrest, unlawful possession of marijuana, reckless driving and numerous traffic violations.

Police said Sgt. Mathew Nielsen was driving on Dewey Avenue about 3:47 a.m. June 14 when he noticed a vehicle back out of a driveway with its lights off. Nielsen followed the vehicle down several village streets, pulling it over on West Avenue — along the Erie Canal — when the driver allegedly tried to drive through Kennelley Park, which does not have vehicle access.

And in a completely unrelated story--

Police received a report June 16 that damage was done to the railing and spindles of the gazebo in Kennelley Park, 2 S. Main St.

I think someone missed the inter-office memo...

Noir Images

I think I figured out a way to do screen captures (Thanks, Dan). If this turns out okay, it may be a regular thing.

This is an image from DEAD RECKONING (1947). Bogie here is straddling the line between good and evil, as evidenced by the lighting putting half of his face in shadow, while the half still in the light is stricken with fear at being caught with a dead body in his hotel room.

Dryden Theatre: The Postman Always Rings Twice (1981)

Just a reminder. The neo-noir remake of THE POSTMAN ALWAYS RINGS TWICE, with Jack Nicholson and Jessica Lange is showing at the Dryden Theatre tonight. And Jessica Lange will be there in person on July 25.

Dryden Theatre: Clash By Night

Don't forget. The 1952 film noir CLASH BY NIGHT, with Barbara Stanwyck, Robert Ryan and Marilyn Monroe, and directed by Fritz Lang, is showing at the Dryden Theatre tonight. Maybe I'll see you there.
